During your Cambridge IGCSE First Language English course you will need to:

  • develop your ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing
  • learn how to use a wide range of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • develop your personal style of writing and speaking, as well as your awareness of the audience you are addressing.

This course aims to enable students to:

  • read a wide range of texts, fluently and with good understanding, enjoying and appreciating a variety of language
  • read critically, and use the knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing
  • write accurately and effectively, using Standard English appropriately
  • work with information and with ideas in language by developing skills of evaluation, analysis, use and inference
  • listen to, understand, and use spoken language effectively
  • acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology and linguistic conventions.

How the course is assessed

There are four components available in the Cambridge IGCSE First Language English course. You will take either two or three components in total. Find out from your teacher which components you will be taking, and when you will be taking them. At the end of your course, your reading and writing skills will be assessed for your final grade for Cambridge IGCSE First Language English. There are two different options for how this can happen.

Option one:
Paper 1
– Reading and
Paper 2
– Directed Writing and Composition

or Option two:
Paper 1
– Reading
– and Component 3 – Coursework Portfolio

The same reading and writing skills will be tested in both options, and you will be able to access the full range of grades for the Cambridge IGCSE qualification. There is also an extra option for assessing your speaking and listening skills:

– Speaking and Listening Test

Guided Learning Hours

We design Cambridge IGCSE syllabuses based on learners having about 130 guided learning hours for each subject during the course but this is for guidance only. The number of hours a learner needs to achieve the qualification may vary according to local practice and their previous experience of the subject.
